Leighton/Navarre Melted Pontil Transitional Marble

Item# GM1174
This is a single pontil purple and white slag type transitional marble, one of the earliest made in America. The pontil mark looks melted to me, but you can judge from the first and the corresponding enlarged pictures, for certain, it has not been ground. The process design was by J.H. Leighton who I guess first allowed his patten to be produced by a company in Navarre Ohio. There is some controversy about the name though, because these marbles also produced using this same process by something like eight additional manufacturers after the short life of the Navarre company ended.
CONDITION: NEAR MINT(+) 8.99 The surface is wet and shiny with just the slightest whisper of microscopic wear and pinpricking such as might be caused by storage with other marbles. There are only two of the pinpricks that I can see with my naked eye and these have glazed bottoms, so are probably as-made. This marble has definitely never been played with, and is in better condition than most of the mint marbles of this type that are usually plagued by blow-holes and fractures.
