There were two types of peppermint swirls made: the banded opaque which were mostly produced in the 1850-1880 time period; and the banded transparent, produce mainly circa 1880-1910, which is the type this one is. Two wide white bands with pink ribbons alternate with cobalt blue bands to completely cover a clear base glass, all of which is encased with a substantial layer of clear glass. I've only had a few of these peppermints in all the decades I've been collecting marbles, and this one is by far the best example I've ever had, or even seen for that matter.
CONDITION: MINT 9.6 Wet shiny surface with no evidence of use at all. Using a 200w light and 20x lens, I can see just the slightest whisper of microscopic wear in one small area. What may appear to be pinpricks or anomalies in the pictures are bubbles in the clear glass casing and their shadows. To my mind, at least, this is a museum quality piece--anyone will be hard pressed to ever find one near as nice, much less better. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 19.87mm or 0.782" at the equator. | |||||
