A crystal clear base glass nearly filled with white wispy strands is adorned by ribbons of dark opaque red and striations of blended greens to make an Akro Agate POPEYE--one of the most celebrated of all marbles in the collecting world. If you look closely at the poles in the first and second pictures, you will see little eyelash-like marks. These marks indicate that the marble was produced prior to the implementation of the so-called "Freeze" improvement, a design change that was installed in April of 1922 to eliminate these marks.
CONDITION: MINT 9.5 The surface is wet and shiny with no sign of play or wear--exceptionally clean marble. All I can find, even with a bright light and lens, is a small crescent that is visible at about 2:00 in the second picture and 3:00 in the sixth. With the absence of any other indication of use, I have to assume this was made during the manufacturing process, a not uncommon occurance. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 15.92mm or 0.626" at the equator. | |||||
