This is a not so common old sulphide with the figure of a wild songbird inside. All sulphides are single gather with only one pontail mark--this one has a pinched seam that has been partially hand ground and faceted which helps to date the marble to the mid-nineteenth century, circa 1850-1880. The figure is fairly well centered, but is a bit close to the surface at the top. The detail of the insert is quite clear and easy to discern. As most collectors know, it is extremely difficult to find sulphide marbles in this wonderful high mint condition.
CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 Wet shiny surface with only the slightest whisper of microscopic wear that is nearly invisible even under a bright light and 10x printer's loupe. What may appear to be light wear in the fourth picture is some very tiny fizz bubbles that are all beneath the surface. Guaranteed not polished--you can easily see the spin marks, especially if you click on the first picture for a greatly enlarged image. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 27.04mm or 1.064" at the equator. | |||||
