At the core of a crystal clear and nearly bubble-free base glass are six very colorful alternating ribbons of yellow, red and white, and green and white that are surrounded, near the surface, by four sets of three lattice ribbons.
The brilliant colors and transpicuous base glass; in addition to, the unfinished pontail marks, allow the manufacture dates of this marble to be estimated to be during the late Victorian period, circa 1880-1910. Many of the marbles of this ilk were made primarily to be included in the game-board market that was very popular in England at this time. At first glance the core appears to be solid, but close examination shows the division of the ribbons. Most DIVIDED CORE swirls commonly had three or sometimes four ribbons at the core--six ribbons are very unusual to say the least. And, to add to the rarity of this example is the wonderful MINT condition maintained for over one hundred years. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.8 WET MINT, PRISTINE with no sign of wear of any kind. Inspected with the aid of a bright light and 10x lens. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 16.03mm or 0.630" at the equator. | |||||
