Akro Agate's Popeye marbles are some of the most collected of all. The defining characteristic is a base glass of crystal clear glass with opaque wispy white strands. They then have two corkscrews of different colors, usually applied to the surface.
Hybrids have more than the two prescribed colors. I know of no evidence indicating the intentional addition of the extra colors. I understand that Hybrids result from color changes made during production runs. In this example, likely, a stream was changing from BLUE to PURPLE; the colors became mixed, resulting in a stream consisting of Purple with a pronounced blue streak. The outcome is that a lovely egg yolk yellow spiral rides contiguously to a light purple with a bright blue streak right down its middle. The trip of nearly two full turns around a marble of the prescribed base glass results in a PURPLE, YELLOW, and BLUE HYBRID POPEYE. CONDITION: MINT 9.6 The surface is wet and shiny with the look of a brand new marble in hand. There are microscopic as-mades that you can barely see if you use a microscope. Excellent condition--has never seen play or handling. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 16.55mm or 0.651" at the equator. | |||||
