This is one of the favorites of Antique German handmade marbles: the PEPPERMINT SWIRL. This one is the Joseph's Coat style with a clear base glass and the red white and blue colors just on the surface. The design is nearly perfect with two sets of three opposing red bands separated by two opposing cobalt blue bands, all on a snow white "skin".
One of the pontail marks is melted to near oblivion and the other is infinished but with no need of grinding to remove any rough places, first picture.
It has been said that these were produced by the German manufacturers to be shipped to the United States in honour of our first centennial anniversary. That, and the two unground pontail marks, I am led to believe that this marble was produced sometime around 1876, certainly between 1870 and possibly, since they were so popular, as late as 1910. These were favorites of the young lads who received them as is evidenced by the fact that almost all of them left are pretty well beat up from being played with. To find one in this wonderful MINT condition is very hard indeed, especially in the very hard to find 3/4" shooter size, and this one is even larger than than that measuring in at a full 49/64". CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 The surface is wet and shiny with no sign of play or wear of any kind. I can't even find any pinpricking or any other as-mades other than some shallow wrinkles that are easily seen in the pictures. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 19.46mm or 0.766" at the equator. | |||||
