Here's probably the most popular of all the two-color Popeyes Akro Agate ever produced. With a deep cobalt blue and bright fire-engine red corkscrews surrounding a crystal clear base glass that is nearly filled with the Popeye-defining white wispy threads, this is the highly sought after RED/BLUE POPEYE. Another feature of this particular marble that makes it prime is the large almost 23/32" size, it is actually over 45/64", and would have qualified as a shooter under the old tournament rules.
The little eyelash-like, or "pre-Freeze" marks are showing which indicate the marble was made sometime prior to 1922 when the so-called "Freeze improvement" was installed which eliminated the marks. So, we have rare colors, raresize, old school production; and to top it all off: the wonderful MINT unplayed with condition. I know how hard they are to find, of this caliber, I've been looking for this one for aboout three years. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 The surface has the wet, shiny look of a brand new marble. I can detect no evidence of play or wear of any kind. There are a very few tiny bubbles whose leading edges barely made it to the surface and a couple that collapsed inward leaving a melted dimple. Everything I can find is clearly as-made and in no way detract from the shine or this marbles exquisite presence. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 18.00mm or 0.708" at the equator. | |||||
