I've heard it said that these were made in Germany about the time of our first centennial anniversary, and these were part of the German tribute to the first 100 years of the United States.
The single pontail mark is unfinished. Partly because it didn't really need to be polished, and because during the late Victorian period, circa 1870-1910, marble manufacturers had stopped the practice of hand polishing the pontail marks. This story also fits in with the date of our first centennial date--1876. This is a breathtaking example of the type and anyone would be hard pressed to present a better specimen, especially in this very popular 3/4"+ size and the wonderful MINT, unused and unplayed with condition. CONDITION: MINT 9.6 The surface is wet and shiny with absolutely no sign of wear of any kind. All I can find is a single tool mark that is best seen in the fifth picture. Exquisite!
