This is the first one of these ONIONSKIN CLOWNs that I've ever had my hands on. I've only seen the ones in books. I consider myself very lucky to have come upon this one.
Spots and streaks of very bright reds, green, blues, and yellow generously cover a white "skin" which in turn covers a clear base glass. For most marble made during this time period, circa 1870-1910, the marbles were just broken off the cane (pontail) and left a rather rough mark. With marbles of this caliber, the workmen took a little more care and melted the pontail mark pretty smooth. Even without the rough pontail marks, the super bright colors are enough to tell the manufacture period. CONDITION: NEAR MINT(+) 8.99 The surface has the wet shiny look of a new marble, but when exposed to a bright light and lens, you can see evidence of some very light, microscopic even, wear; so, be prepared. The rather large bubbles you see in the pictures are all below the surface and do not cause any depressions or blowouts. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 19.48mm or 0.767" at the equator. | |||||
