Marketed as the Akro Agate Tri-Color Onyx and later POPEYEs, the base glass is clear with opaque white wispy threads and two different colored corkscrews. Occasionally, when changing the colors in the streams of the colored corkscrews, some of the previous colors would still be present and combined with the new. Resulting in Popeyes of three, four, or even more colors and are more than a little rare. These are now known as HYBRID POPEYEs by collectors.
With this particular example, primarily a purple and yellow Popeye, the purple corkscrew has a streak of cobalt blue running down the center, and, as if that weren't enough, the yellow cork has a fainter but still easily visible red showing toward its edge.
Depending on the colors, finding a hybrid Popeye is not a unique experience, but to find a Popeye with additional colors on both corkscrews is remarkable. This magnificent specimen, twice a HYBRID POPEYE, is near to being one of a kind.
CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7-9.8 The surface is completely unblemished except for one tiny melted dimple, and that's it. This is the wet shiny finish that high-end collectors expect and demand. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 15.84mm or 0.623" at the equator. | |||||
