By definition: an ONIONSKIN is a clear base German hand made marble with a sheet, or skin, of usually white or yellow covering the entire surface of the clear, then overlaid with colored streaks or someetimes spots. This one doesn't have the skin underlying the colored strands, and, in fact, presents much like a mist or a Joseph's coat; However, from more recent tradition, the name onionskin is now usually used. The streaks of color are predominately diverse shades of green and gold, and an inordinate amount of sparkling goldstone, lutz, sprinkled in varying amounts on nearly all of the colored streaks running from pole to pole, some quite heavily.
Of the various types of marbles made in which goldstone particals were used, the onionskin is one of the rarest and consequently one of the most ardently sought after. The pontail marks, shown in the fifth and sixth images, are both unfinished, helping us to date it's manufacture to the latter period of the German handmade glass marble era, circa, 1880-1910; as is also the case of most lutz marbles. Considering the growing numbers of collectors, marbles of this rather peculiar type, with such a large amount of goldstone, and in such wonderful mint condition, have become nearly impossible to find. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 or better. The surface is wet and shiny with no signs of play or wear, and the pontail marks are as clean as the day they were made.
