These are some of the first marbles made in the United States. They are also some of the first to be made using machinery. The molten glass was gathered by hand, then fed to a shaping mechanism. Collectors later called marbles made by this process "transitionals," indicating a period during which the industry was transitioning from handmade to machine-made marbles.
One of the first American companies to use this method was M.F. Christensen & Sons, who made this marble: almost pure OXBLOOD, nowadays known as the BRICK.
