The Saphire color seen in the pictures, shows a bit darker than the color tint of the marble, possibly because of the darker background used in the photography. The diameter is just under 7/8", quite large for one of these old Clearies, especially one with such a load of MICA. A relatively thick black string runs from pole to pole at the core.
This marble has some serious age on it. The exquisitely ground basal pontail mark is as shiny as the rest of the marble's surface, dripping wet. These old antique marbles with the ground pontail mark can date to the beginning of glass marbles, circa 1850-1870. There should be a pontail mark of some description, e.g., a tiny pigtail, on the opposite end, but it is just not there. I suppose the artist who made the marble melted the mark at this end to oblivion, or possibly a single pontail marble from one of the ends of the cane. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 The surface, including the basal pontail mark, is wet and shiny and shows no signs of play or wear. You may click here to view the grading system I use.
