CONDITION: JOSEPH's COATs, larger than one-inch, are some of the most hard-to-find marbles there are. After many miles and months of searching, you finally find one, only to discover it looks like someone with anger management issues has beaten it with a large hammer; that or it costs a couple of house payments.
The base glass is transparent clear with a smattering of tiny, almost microscopic, bubbles. Some of the smallest have a shiny undefined substance, resembling aventurine or mica, trapped in their bottoms. Best seen in the sixth image. These color bands are primarily blue plus a few red or yellow ones here and there. They form the shape of a large, slightly shrunken cage surrounding an apparently empty center. Here's where it gets exciting; the center isn't empty! The fourth image has the best view of a narrow green latticinio web stationed at the core of the marble. Since Joseph's Coats are supposedly coreless marbles, any structure beneath the colored bands is unusual. But, a green latticinio is a rarity of its own. All Joseph's Coats are rare, with the value growing proportionately with the eye appeal, size, rarity, and, of course, condition, e.g., the assessment increases as the colors become more and more striking and or the size of the diameter increases. Those achieving a full one-inch diameter seem to be near extinction or very well hidden; therefore, a higher value. Any marble in the condition of this one has a better chance at the highest appraisal. CONDITION: MINT 9.6 The surface is wet and shiny with no signs of play or wear. Also, the pontail marks are as clean as the day they left the factory. I love to describe a mint marble; it takes so few words. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 26.25mm or 1.037" at the equator. | |||||
