Rumored to have been made in Germany to honor our First Centennial, the US's 100th birthday, this old-timer, said to be a FLAG, is one of those tributes. At least the dates are corroborated. The unground pontail marks agree that the marble was made sometime after makers quite grinding the pontail marks, circa 1870.
The marble is an 11/16" CLEARIE with no outer decor. A single red, white, and blue ribbon occupies the core that does, indeed, resemble a half furled flag, see 3rd and 5th pictures. These are extremely hard to find in such extraordinary condition. CONDITION: NEAR MINT(+) There are some places that I couldn't say whether they belong to the maker or the owner.. They are almost too light too photograph. The pontail marks are as clean as the day they were made. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 17.30mm or 0681" at the equator. | |||||
