A BLIZZARD describes a marble with FLOATING MICA that completely fills its interior, causing a snowstorm, or blizzard, effect. This example is a dark transparent green German handmade CLEARIE with a high concentration of mica flakes all around and just below its surface. Although not a Blizzard by definition, it is still a very heavy application of mica not often seen.
The pontail marks are as clean as those of a brand new marble. One is melted to near oblivion, and the other has been exquisitely ground and faceted. The grinding and faceting practice of finishing marbles was used in the early days of glass marble manufacturing, circa 1850-1870. The large, near 7/8" size provides plenty of surface area to contrast the bright shiny mica flakes against the shine of the unmarred dark green glass. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 or better. After a thorough inspection, I can, with safety, say that this marble shows no signs of wear or use at all. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 21.66mm or 0.853" at the equator. | |||||
