Black ribbons swirl with a UV reactive green base glass describes this old Alley Agate swirl from the 1930s. As the ranks of new marble collectors swell, these old West Virginia swirls have become correspondingly more popular. And their prices have proportionately soared. The named varieties have notably prospered from this avalanche of new interest.
In the not too distant past, a practice developed of identifying the unrecognized WV swirls as Christensen Agate. Research of these smaller companies has effectively brought about more valid IDs. Some of the incorrect CAC identifiers have continued, e.g., the Alley Agate Blue Lady and Pistachio Swirl are still considered, by some, a CAC product. CONDITION: NEAR MINT: The surface maintains a nice shine but shows some light "pocket wear." Two or three pinpricks and a small blow-hole fail to pass close inspection; however, they are not prominent in hand or on display. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 13.80mm or 0.543" at the equator. | |||||
