This old Akro Agate player raises some identification questions: Should it be defined as a famous POPEYE? or a multi-colored SNAKE?
A marble must meet two criteria for a Popeye: A transparent-clear base glass with opaque white wispy treads to host two differently colored corkscrews. The wispy white threads, though sparse, are present in the clear base glass. The other Popeye prerequisites are also easily satisfied--in fact, three rather than two distinct colors of corkscrews abide here. The combination of red and green is one of the more common color combinations seen on Popeye marbles; orange, however, is not. I am confident that a POPEYE was the maker's original intent, for it does fit in quite well with my Popeye display; besides, there are lots of Popeyes with surface corkscrews around. On the other hand, an Akro Snake is defined as a transparent clear marble with a surface corkscrew. Sometimes, it is possible to find corkscrews with two colors, their rarity ranging from relatively common to quite rare, according to the combination of colors. Snake corkscrews with three colors, while not impossible, are extremely hard to find. For this instance, four colors, including the white, have found their way around the surface of the transparent-clear base glass. This marble meets all of the requirements of a Snake Corkscrew, howbeit, a one-of-a-kind, FOUR-COLOR SNAKE--a very rare and elusive marble indeed. CONDITION: MINT 9.6 The surface has the glossy wet shine of a new marble. I can detect no signs of wear. The tiny bubbles you see in the pictures are, for the most part, sub-surface, but some have nearly made it to the surface to the point that just the leading-edge of the bubble barely broke through. I can find no other anomalies to report. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 16.03mm or 0.631" at the equator. | |||||
