A NAKED SOLID CORE swirl is a marble that doesn't turn up very often.
To affect a solid core, arranging ribbons such that there were no spaces sometimes achieved the desired results; however, much, if not most, of the time, a gap showed at some point, and the solid-core effect was lost. In this instance, two sets of similar color schemes: amethyst, yellow, sky-blue, and white, have the appearance of a double ribbon with its edges fused into the solid core swirl before you. Like their later machine-made counterparts, most German handmades were 11/16" or smaller, with a smattering of somewhat larger-sized shooters. Eminently more expensive to produce, fewer were made. Furthermore, marbles approaching one inch, as is this one, were often deemed too large for competition. Nearly all the old German handmade marbles had some surface decoration, from brightly colored ribbons to a few lattice lines; those few that didn't were termed NAKED. As a solid core swirl, this marble is relatively scarce, at 29/32", oversized compared to the norm, makes it a good deal more challenging to find, and naked to boot, just about rings all the bells declaring it to be a rare marble indeed. And, if that weren't enough, behold the superb mint condition. CONDITION: MINT 9.5 I can find no evidence of play or handling and no factory as-mades to speak of, for that matter. If there is an anomaly, I suppose it would be the slight cold-roll marks shown toward the bottom of the second and third pictures. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 23.11mm or 0.910" at the equator. | |||||
