DESCRIPTIONWe've all called these "GREEN MICAs" for so long that I nearly forget what they actually are: GREEN CLEARIEs with MICA. I wonder, sometimes, that a plain Clearie is hardly ever seen, but there are usually Micas around. The answer is probably, as always, about money.
Back in the days when the pontail marks were ground and faceted, 1850-1870, the expense of producing a marble that didn't have a lot of eye appeal, like a plain Clearie, quickly became cost-prohibitive. The answer was an infusion of mica, a cheap shiny, which did improve the glamor quite a lot. One of the pontail marks has been exquisitely ground, and the other is a cute little pigtail. So, this is definitely one of those early originals from the mid-nineteenth century. I guess it will always be a mystery: How its condition has been maintained in its like-new state for over 150 years? This marble had to be a hog of a green Clearie to finish out at over an inch in diameter. Very few that size were made, and fewer still are ever seen available. To find one in this condition is almost beyond hope. CONDITION: MIINT(+) 9.7-9.8 Even with the help of a 10x printer's loupe and a bright light source, I can't find anything to report except the glossy wet shine of the near-perfect surface.
