DESCRIPTION: While perusing a collection of handmade marbles I had just purchased, I came across an orange latticinio swirl. The design of the web is exquisite.
At the surface, four pastel blue bands alternate with four white to form a cage surrounding the orange web at the core. The bands are perfectly spaced, and a delightful pinwheel resulted from the just-so twist of the marble as it was removed from the cane. The fifth and sixth pictures show the pinwheels are as flawless as the rest of the composition.
The colors, the crystal clear base glass, and the unfinished pontail marks help determine a manufacture date for this marble to be sometime near the end of German participation in the manufacture of handmade marbles, circa 1880-1910. Such an unusual color combination and design perfection seldom coexist and are exceedingly rare, but the piece de resistance here is the superb mint condition. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 or better The surface is glossy wet looking, and there is no sign of wear whatsoever. A few tiny air bubbles came too near the surface, collapsed, and formed needle point-sized melted dimples. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 17.68mm or 0.680" at the equator. | |||||
