DESCRIPTION: Joseph's Coat was named, by the earliest collectors, for the coat of many colors Isaac gave to his youngest son, Joseph. They are handmade marbles made in Germany near the end of the nineteenth century, circa 1870-1910; some of the most beautiful marbles ever made.
Joseph's Coats are clear-based marbles with bands, ribbons, lines, or streaks on the surface only. Usually, spaces between the ribbons allow you to see through to the other side. One Inch Joseph's Coats are exceedingly rare, especially if they have to be in mint condition. At 1-1/4", this marble is a veritable giant. I don't often see Joseph"s Coats that reach an inch, and seldom had the chance at one this huge. I've only seen a couple in my life that were bigger, and those looked like someone had beaten them with a hammer. Not so here. CONDITION: MINT 9.5-9.6 The surface is shiny and wet-looking; and the faintest evidence of any wear is just that, the faintest of scratch marks. The primary problem I see is it looks like there was dirt on some finishing tool, rollers probably, because there are tiny melted dimples with specks of debris in their bottoms; the debris had to get there while the marble was hot. It is a rare and enjoyable occasion to find a marble of such high-end caliber and size in such marvelous condition. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 31.82mm or 1.253" at the equator. | |||||
