DESCRIPTION: WOW! Here you have Beauty and the Beast all in one. Four alternating yellow and white panels cover the surface of this huge Transparent clear marble. Over the surface of the white panels are blue spots and streaks, and red spots and streaks cover the yellow panels. There are also a couple of appearances of black, a very infrequent occurrence for these old German marbles.
The age of this marble is not hard to figure: The basal pontail mark has been ground and faceted. Glass was first used in the manufacture of marbles in 1850. When a marble was broken from the source cane or pontail, a rough pontail mark was left. The craftsman would then grind the mark smooth, leaving facets. This practice was used until deemed too expensive and discontinued in the latter part of the nineteenth century, circa 1870. Although they continued to manufacture marbles until around 1910 or thereabout, Germany began its decline as a significant contributor of handmade marbles about this time. CONDITION: NEAR MINT(+) The incredible shine of this bad-a** beast almost makes you forget the slight wear that is illuminated at the small area where a direct light shines on the marble. In hand, this slight wear is hardly noticeable; displayed in my lighted curio, it is invisible. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 49.85mm or 1.787" at the equator. | |||||
