DESCRIPTION: This marble is a Martin F. Christensen and Son hand-gathered transitional medium-dark Amber Slag.
M.F. Christensen and his son, Charles Frederick, founded the M.F. Christensen and Son Company soon after the turn of the twentieth century, circa 1903. The glass for each batch was melted in a single pot, called a single stream. By mixing an opaque white swirl with a transparent color, they could produce a handsome variety of two-color slag, or swirl, marbles. Their only other option was single-color opaques. Hand gathered on a punty, or pontail, from the oven. The marble was then fed into the rounding mechanism. MFC marbles, and the earliest marble manufacturers' products made by this method, are classed as transitionals, as they transitioned the process from entirely hand-made to entirely machine-made. As predecessors to the machine-made marbles, such as those by Akro Agate, Peltier, Christensen Agate Company, and others, these are some of the oldest American-made marbles. CONDITION: MINT(+) 9.7 The surface is glossy wet and shiny with a couple of tiny melted dimples and a slight trace of wear that you can find if you look hard enough and use magnification.
