Item# DESCRIPTION: I thought the somewhat whimsical title of ATOMIC SPIRAL ONYX was quite appropriate. In this case, the transparent colored base glass with the white spiral corkscrew is VASELINE glass and is indeed known as an Akro ONYX. Because of its uranium oxide content, VASELINE glass presents as chartreuse and is highly ultraviolet (UV) reactive, hence, ATOMIC.
Due to its use in the WWII Manhatten Project (the first atomic bomb), uranium oxide for glass production was prohibited during the 1940s, maybe not so whimsical. CONDITION: MINT 9.6 The surface has the high wet shine expected of a mint marble. Two small melted dimples are juxtaposed near one of the poles, and an open air bubble hides among its sub-surface progenitors at the other. Although it cannot be seen in the pictures, a tiny sparkle appears and disappears as the marble is rotated under magnification and a bright light. You may click here to view the grading system I use. Size 16.95mm or 0.666" at the equator. | |||||
